I must say that this movie really had me hooked. I felt privileged to be invited to the private screening.

The chemistry between Tom Keenan and Daria Puttaert is fantastic. You really feel like these two are a genuine couple. The film could just as easily been about the struggles of a newlywed couple, and in a sense it is. Unfortunatly for them though, their struggles are dealing with not only a rape, but if the child she is pregnant with is the rapists or Adams.

The film was powerful to say the least. Although I’m not sure what the “controversy” is. However this might be because I’ve seen some very graphic films so I might not be sensitive enough to see it.

I knew about the rape going in and it’s all anyone at RRC can talk about. The scene is not graphic by any means, because it’s dark. It’s also in brilliant contrast to the more graphic, fully lit, sex scene at the beginning of the movie. Two people who are clearly in deep love with each other, and then the rape scene later that you watch blind. The audio is what makes that scene have so much weight. The viewer is experiencing almost exactly what Adam is. Feeling helpless, blind, but you know exactly whats going on by Zooey’s screams for help. Really a terrifying scene.

Some big credit needs to be given to Sean for taking the “sex” out of the rape scene. He makes it uncomfortable, unbearable, and frighteningly real. In no way can this scene be construed as erotic, and that is a problem most films that deal with rape have trouble with.

I can’t wait to see it again this Friday!!

A wonderful film, full of compasssion and complexity. I wonder, though about the choice of music. The Indian-like style seemed to have nothing al all to do with the content of the film. Sean, did I miss something?
